Chess Tournament

July 28, 2024

As Armenian-Americans growing up in the Northeast, we both had the privilege of attending AYF Camp Haiastan for five consecutive summers. Some of our most cherished and lasting memories were made there. It was at camp that we truly connected with other Armenian-American children, deepened our bond with our heritage, and formed lifelong friendships.

Now, we want to give the same opportunity to children in Armenia—the chance to build lasting connections with their peers and create meaningful memories. The Armenian Relief Society runs a similar camp in Georgia called Camp Javakhk, and we believe this would be the perfect way to give back to the community that shaped our own childhoods. Through this initiative, we aim to help children experience the same sense of belonging and connection to their roots that we were fortunate to have.

Why chess? Chess is a game that requires not only strategic thinking but also patience, focus, and perseverance. Beyond its intellectual challenge, chess holds a special cultural significance in Armenia, where it is deeply cherished and celebrated. Given its rich history and the education value the game holds, chess became the perfect way to fundraise. That is why we chose to organize a chess tournament for our very first fundraiser!

A total profit of $600 was given to the Armenian Relief Society to fund their Camp Javakhk program.
